I salute Joan of Arc
02.23.07 (1:19 am)   [edit]
Sometime ago, I wrote about the women who inspired and are continuing to inspire my life. The valor and courage I get from such historical figures like Joan of Arc, the french female warrior who fought the battle against the English for the freedom of France. A great inspiration in courage, valor, and sacrifice. I haven't seen the movie 'The Messenger' which was released in 1999 in which Milla Jovovich gives a stunning performance as Joan of Arc.

I have the trailer here for all who'd like to know the glimpses of her life. She is absolutely one of my greatest inspiration. She disguised herself as a male mostly and was almost transgendered.

In my opinion, Joan of Arc WAS transgendered. trans = "to cross" Not just in dress, but in action, Joan of Arc defied what was considered to be appropriate for a "woman". She crossed the line in her/his? society's eyes.

I'd vote for "Jean" as the patron saint of all trans people.

p.s. - I wish that the English language was one which did not polarize things by sex and gender.

...and I wish, since we can't seem to change that, that I knew whether "Jean D'Arc" would have preferred "he" to "she".

Either way, Jean (or Joan, or even John) was an INCREDILE PERSON.

She was an incredible person living in a time that was incredibly set against empowering women. The movie, despite being directed by Luc Besson, walks the line between Joan being a saint and being crazy. He doesn't take a stance either way, giving ample proof for both scenarios, ultimately leaving it up to the audience to decide.

Saintly, crazy or not, she achieved some amazing feats, against some of the worst odds.
