The Navarasa Debate
08.11.07 (1:52 pm)   [edit]
Reputed Indian cinematographer/Director Santhosh Sivan made a beautiful and touching film on the Indian Transgendered community called 'Navarasa'. It received National Film Award and several other film awards across the globe. Unfortunately, the movie did not reach the 99.9% of the audience because it was not a commercial film. Santhosh was busy in attending international film festivals and did not make any effort to make the film reach atleast the Transgendered community.

The purpose of the film, as I understood after watching it on DVD (given to me by a media student)was to create awareness about Transgendered people and their emotions, need for acceptance and suffering. However, I am angry towards Santhosh because he did not take efforts to make the film reach atleast some segments of the media and the public.

It's strange that he would make such a good film and not bother to advertise it properly.

Maybe we are not aware of his efforts to popularize the film. Personally I believe, that any creator / artist would like to have his creation / art to reach people and expect to get much criticism and appreciation for it. Santosh may also have taken efforts to popularize his film, but, the cue to popularize it lies with the distributors and media. Did his film receive the exposure it needed through the media? No would be the answer. I still remember that Santosh had advertised the film in papers and tv channels. There were trailers being shown on tv channels. However, apart from his own advertising, none of the tv channels or print media ran any article on it. Why? Because its not a commercial piece and it pains the "money-savvy" media kings to "waste" even five minutes of their air time or print space on anything that is not commercial.
