I wish to hold gender seminars in colleges of Kerala
06.29.08 (5:45 pm)   [edit]
Kerala is a very male dominated state. I have never heard any stories of successful transwoman from the state. They are all fearfully hiding and can not struggle with the powerful dominations of men. Moreover, the state has its own culture which wouldn't fit even for the survival of the transgendered women.

I have met many pre-operated transsexual girls from Kerala and what I can find from them first is the way they hide their sexual identities. Thats so sad that they just can't be themselves. Atleast the next generation of trnaswomen should be bold and brave enough to come out openly and live successfully in their gender identities. Kerala should change and be embracing to times of change. I am crossing my fingers and waiting to visit the universities and colleges of Kerala and offer its students workshops/talks on gender expressions and transgender issues.

I will be writing to the colleges from tommorrow.

Though rich and priveleged transwoman like you are struggling to uplift the TG community from its morass, but majority of them still wallow in beggary and social exclusion. Understably, it is the social stigma that is denying their rightful place in the society, however, a lot has also to do with the feudalistic age-old practice of Hijras who follow the 'chela' tradition. An exploitative hierarchy like caste that subordinates a young Hijra to a senior regarless of former's educational and skill background. Even in an episode of 'Ipadikku Rose' a Hijra despite being a IT graduate revealed about her bitter days of begging in trains to conform to the 'chela' tradition. I believe it is time to do a social re-engineering of Indian Hijra community. The gen-X Hijras should break the shackles of oppressive 'chela' customs and be rationally independent.

Begging is not imposed upon hijras by the society it is the Indian TS community that self-advocates the bane in the name of archaic custom and tradition.

Let me share a thought on how IT can empower Hijras. The booming IT and ITES industry is opening the flood-gates of opportunity the India way. There are new trends like working from home appearing in the employment horizon. You don't have to physically travel to your work place. you can remain anonym and work. It is time for people like you to catch the tide, train your educated people in BPO and ITES skills so they can grab high paid jobs from their homes itself. All you need is a PC and a broad band internet connection. You are young, educated, empowered and emancipated. You can be an Ambedkar, Nelson Mandela or a Cheguvera of your community if you rope in revolutionary changes in your brethren's life without resorting to forceful revolution.
